I have been leading restructuring activities in my business for the past 8 months. At least once a day, a colleague asks me how I stay positive while leading such a "heavy" process. For me, the answer is simple: I view it as my mission to infuse care and connection into an otherwise difficult process. I challenge myself and the HRMs and Leaders I work with to provide the type of support - throughout the notification period and even beyond - that employees would thank us for in the end.

I recently received a call from someone launching a start-up (alumTee) with a mission of "building a better leaving experience." Immediate music to my ears! Their concept is to provide services and networks to (1) help employees transition out of a business with care, (2) stay connected with the business after they've gone and (3) cultivate connections with other company alumni who are "out there" in the world.

"Strive to provide the kind of support that an employee will thank you for in the end."

I have decided to dedicate some of my personal time to helping this team understand (from an HR and employee perspective) what offerings can bring this concept to life. alumTee's founders have created a brief virtual design workshop and are seeking input and ideas for this new product.

If you have ever notified an employee of a job loss...

If you have even been notified that your role was eliminated...

I hope you can spare a few minutes of your time to tell alumTee about your experience and what would have eased your leaving experience.

And by the way... I could talk for days about how to provide this kind of "uncommon" transition support. Give me a shout if you want to chat more about this topic, or leave your own ideas in the comments!

I'm glad to share my experiences. So many tools that I wish existed to help with the transition. Calculators, ideas to get by in the short term, etc...
