Becoming a CFO or Head of Finance is among the highest aspirations of financial professionals. For some, it represents the pinnacle of the finance profession. So how do you get there?
I wish I could tell you there is a secret or a map. There isn't.
You won't meet many young CFOs with little experience who found a shortcut. Instead, you'll often find sharp, well-seasoned leaders. They are technically astute, have deep institutional and industry expertise, and earned their place at the helm of the finance function.
A background in strategic finance and accounting is key. Full-time and fractional CFOs are increasingly possessing MBAs, investment banking or consulting experience. The strategic and critical thinking aptitude developed in these forums lends itself well to strategic finance and planning.
According to the Wall Street Journal, among the 1,000 largest public companies in the United States tracked over the last decade, between 36% and 46% of the CFOs had CPAs. And according to Deloitte, 47% of CFOs had at least some experience in FP&A before becoming the chief financial executive.
In this ebook, I share recommendations and insights for financial professionals aspiring to reach the C-suite. I also explain more about the foundations accounting and FP&A can offer.
The encore to Carl's Level 1 Cash Flow Forecasting course, this course dives into data management, dynamic processes, and deeper thinking.
