FP Logue turns 10

Today, I find myself reflecting on a journey that began ten years ago when I set up FP Logue, a journey filled with uncertainty, hope, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference.

When I started FP Logue, I had no idea where this path would lead. Now, looking back, I am overwhelmed with gratitude and pride for the incredible experiences and growth that have marked this decade.

The early days were challenging, but I was lucky not to make any serious mistakes and kept on the right side of the regulators - but through perseverance and a lot of luck, I managed to navigate those initial hurdles.

Chance encounters, like sharing pints with Gavin Sheridan at the International Bar and meeting barrister John Kenny at a dinner in the Winding Stair, became pivotal moments that shaped my journey which has taken me from my spare room to pleading before the Grand Chamber of the Court of Justice in Luxembourg.

I have been blessed to work with extraordinary clients and collaborate with some of the most talented and dedicated professionals in Ireland and Europe. Their passion and commitment have been a source of inspiration and strength, helping to build FP Logue into what it is today.

Over the past ten years, I have been involved in over 200 High Court cases, 33 appeals, 18 Luxembourg cases, and 5 communications to the Aarhus Convention Compliance Committee. Each case has been a step forward, not just for me, but for the cause of environmental justice. Highlights include:

• Minch v Commissioner for Environmental Information: My first case, which clarified the definition of environmental information and set the tone for my career.
• Right to Know v An Taoiseach: Proving that Cabinet Confidentiality is not an absolute barrier to accessing environmental information.
• Friends of the Irish Environment v Fingal County Council: One of Ireland’s first “climate cases,” marking a tentative recognition of environmental rights in the constitution.
• Right to Know v Commissioner for Environmental Information: The first detailed examination of the functions and powers of the President and Council of State.
• Costello v Government of Ireland: Challenging the constitutionality of ratifying Investor State Dispute Settlement by the Government.
• Public.Resource.Org and Right to Know v Commission: Ensuring free and open access to EU law.

I owe a special debt of gratitude to Niall Rooney , a former partner whose early contributions laid the foundation for our firm, and to Eoin Brady , whose exceptional skills, work ethic, and dedication to environmental law have elevated our practice to new heights. I am deeply thankful to all my colleagues, clients, and collaborators who have been part of this journey.

As I look to the future, I am filled with a mix of anticipation and determination. The unimaginable challenges posed by climate change and biodiversity collapse are immense, but so is our resolve.

The journey continues, and while I still don’t know where it will lead or when it will end, I am ready to face the future with the same passion and commitment that has brought me this far.
