Another week, another fun few days at the PorterShed. This week has really been all about the spooky season, and we've really enjoyed getting into the festive fun with pumpkin-carving competitions, Halloween decorations, and ghoulish gift-giving! Halloween is a really great time of the year - and because it's an old Irish tradition, it surely means so much more - something Mary Rodgers touched on in this month's PorterShed Monthly. It's always nice to have something to look forward to - especially in the world of non-stop founder life - so, we hope everyone out there has a fantastic Bank Holiday weekend; make the most of the downtime because it's important to rest and recharge - in between scary movie marathons, of course! In the meantime, why not join us for a quick recap of the last few days - a lot has happened!
But before we do - a word on Yurko and Kate: they are jetting off to the States to start a new adventure, and while we'll miss having them around our community, we're excited for them and their futures. All the very best of luck, folks - and you're welcome back any time!
This week, Climathon 2022 took centre stage in the Galmont Hotel, and the PorterShed were once again delighted to take part in helping to host the event. Every year, teams of students gather together to go from zero to a big idea in just a few hours, and the results are always spectacular, to say the least. This year was no different! Five teams took part to come up with ideas in favour of climate action - and the overall winners were Oilaway who came up with a solution to solve the problem of cooking oil contaminating the water supply. Runners up FunFish had an ingenious way of combatting the problem of plastic in the oceans - and plastic in fish. Well done to all the teams who took part - and a special shout-out to the entire organising team, including facilitator Molly McLoughlin.
Every week, we organise Blas - a way for our members to savour culinary delights from all over the city. This time around, we tasted the glorious chicken fillet roll from Centra, and as many as 25 people took part. For some, it was their first time enjoying this unique Irish delicacy - and Office Manager Aoife Cheung went all out to arrange delivery and serve up tasty accompaniments. Make sure you keep an eye out to see where we'll be eating from next week!
Anthony and Trevor travelled to Dublin's Dogpatch Labs to attend a marketing offsite, and it was a really productive day. They met up with some of the teams from the other NDRC hubs, including RDI Hub in Kerry, Republic of Work in Cork - and of course the team from Dogpatch Labs in the capital. It's always rewarding to meet up in person and brainstorm ideas, and it was a fantastic day of collaboration. We're looking forward to the next one again in 2023!
On Thursday, Cormac Rowe - who features in this month's newsletter with a blog interview - hosted the second Web3 event of 2022. Excitingly, there will be another edition taking place next month. It was a fantastic event that provided a really insightful dive into the world of VR, the metaverse, NFTs, and more. If you're interested in attending the next one, make sure you keep an eye on our social channels to find out when and where it's happening...details coming soon.
We continued promoting the ARISE social enterprise event that will be taking place in the Building Block, Sligo, next month. On Tuesday, November 8th, Nora Fahy from Roscommon Women's Network/CycleUp and Helen Nolan from Spraoi agus Spórt, will take to the stage to speak about their social enterprise experiences. You can register for the event right here - and it's shaping up to be a really fantastic event.

And we wrapped up the week with an announcement about who had won the pumpkin-carving competition at Bowling Green. This year, we had some really eye-catching entries, and a few winners were picked out. Galway Chamber President Dermot Nolan was kind enough to offer up his time to announce the winners and present prizes, so thanks Dermot for doing that!
