Four tips for mathematics leaders wanting to bring about pedagogical change

I speak with mathematics leaders from across the globe every week. All the ones I talk with are striving to bring about improvements in their teachers’ teaching. Despite their teachers’ best efforts, most leaders agree that too much learning in mathematics classrooms is passive.?

However, it is difficult for a mathematics leader to bring about significant pedagogical change in their teachers. Most teachers - covertly or overtly - resist receiving pedagogical direction from their Department Head.?

And don’t forget the mother of all resistances to pedagogical change - teachers are often happy to trial new activities … as long as their default approach to teaching maths remains unchanged. It’s as if the default approach of the teacher is sacred. And yet many teachers don’t seriously question their default!

Of course, the best advice we can offer leaders trying to inspire their teachers to foster more active learning in their classrooms is to enrol in one of our Department-wide PDs. After all, we developed the Department-wide approach specifically for this reason - to support leaders trying to bring about pedagogical change.

There is always resistance to change. Even if the expected outcome is better. It's interesting to hear that even teachers who are open to change are sometimes still stuck in their old ways.

Excellent share, Richard! When you have teachers who still use their default approach to teaching, as a leader, you must first raise their awareness and discuss what pedagogical change can bring to the table for students to learn interactively.

You have provided an excellent video here for math teachers to ponder, Richard. The situation has been exacerbated by the impact of the global pandemic, but maths pedagogy must be continually shifting as learner needs and resources evolve.
