One of the most difficult concepts of writing a book is just getting started. Maybe you have had an idea about what you want to write about, but you don’t know what to say. Or maybe you don’t know what you want to say at all, but the idea of getting your ideas out into the world excites you. Either way, there are some simple measures to take to get you closer to publishing your book.
1. ? ? Figure Out Your Niche or Message
The first task to get started is to decide what exactly you want to write about. For this step, it might be easier to start with a general idea and narrow it down. For instance, you know you’ve been wanting to write about owning a business. You could then write about the most helpful tips to beginners, how to be a motivational leader, or how to make their business grow. Start with a general idea, then narrow it down to specifics to see what stands out to you.
2. ? ? Create Your Outline
Constructing an outline allows you to see the foundations of your book. In this step, you can create your main points that you want to express. Creating this foundation also gives you the opportunity to consider your smaller, but equally important ideas. This way, you can ensure your chapters have enough information for your reader.
Outlines can also help you determine if your main points are cohesive and make sense for your story. One of the greatest parts about having an outline is the fact that it’s forgivable. Rearranging and changing the outline is much more simple than fixing a book. Lastly, using your outline as a checklist while editing can help you ensure that you hit all your important points.
3. ? ? Set Daily or Weekly Goals

Having daily or weekly goals helps to create momentum with your writing. This goal can be specific to your life and free time. What is a realistic goal for you? Does 500 words a day sound like something doable for you? Maybe you have a tight schedule but want to make some progress. Some days might be harder than others when it comes to your writing, so don’t go too hard on yourself and make your goal unattainable. Creating this goal only helps you set a schedule for your book. It ultimately allows you to finish your book in a reasonable time and holds you accountable.?
4. ? ? Self-Editing and Peer Editing
One of the most important and final steps is editing your work. Editing can catch any grammar, spelling, or structure mistakes. This could also be a good time to refer to your outline mentioned in step two and use it as a checklist to confirm all your points made it into your book.?
Having a peer editor review your book allows you to receive an outside perspective. Constantly rereading and writing our own work is an easy way to accidentally overlook any errors. They may also be able to give you feedback on any parts that need to be condensed or expanded.? Overall, the editing process is the final step that cleans up your book before having it published.?
