Preparation for a fire or natural disaster is a task that we’d rather not deal with ?? ♀?

But pretending these don’t exist is unwise and planning ahead for such an event- especially when a special-needs child is involved- is CRUCIAL.

Practical as ever, Kelly Bermingham teaches us a simple four-step system for preparing for these crises together with a special needs child.

  1. Give instructions: These should be simple and straightforward. “If your clothes get caught on fire, you need to STOP what you’re doing, DROP to the floor and ROLL on the ground so the fire will go out.”

2. Modeling: Actually act out for the child what the instructions look like in real-time.

3. Rehearsing: Together with the child, practice these instructions so they can see what exactly they should be doing.

4. Feedback: Ask the child for feedback about how this drill went for them.

So simple, yet literally life-altering.

May we never have to use these in real life.

But knowing that you’ve done the best to prepare your clients for an emergency is HUGE??.
