Four Kinds of Values That Shape Decision Making

We make 35,000 decisions every day, and some decisions are easier than others.

Think for a moment about the last hard decision you had to make. We are talking absolute?decisiveness, and not like what you were going to binge-watch on Netflix.

Now ask yourself why was there tension?

voices in our head matter

Isn't it peculiar that we can have an internal debate with just ourselves? I find it fascinating. Have you ever stopped and reflected on what makes up your inner monolog?

Our internal monolog is based on our values.

When making decisions, our values influence our choices because these are part of our character and beliefs.

What are values?

Your values are the things that you believe are important in the way you live and work. Values guide behaviors and influence your decisions.

Let's briefly look at four different types of values;

Assumptive Values

  • Hypotheses are critical to life and are based on our own internal experiences and external learning from others. Assumptions are the unquestioned standards about people, life, and "the way things are." HOWEVER, ASSUMPTIONS MUST BE CHALLENGED. Wake up and question your assumptions.

Aspiring Values

  • Goals are not values, and goals are constant reminders of our inadequacies. As humans, we have a natural desire to want, but that doesn't make us who we are. An excellent way to I.D. an aspiring value is to say, "I'm working on being _______." If you are working on it, it's an aspiration.

Associative Values

  • A shared group of values connects the groups we associate with. Growing up, I was in the Boy Scouts and was taught to live by Boy Scout Law (A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent). So the values that transcend the groups you belong to should be identified.

Apersonal Values

  • Also called core values, these are?a set of fundamental beliefs, ideals, or practices that inform how you conduct your life, both personally and professionally.?Unlike the other defined values, these are innate to you and refined over time.

How to refine your intrinsic values?

Write down 15-20 values that are important to you, then group them, and rank them. List out your top 5, and write out a "value statement." Then put the value statement to the test this week and allow it to influence the decisions you make this week.

I would love to hear your stories on this!
