There are four kinds of Christmas...
Bryce Main
Multi-genre author, mostly Crime fiction. Scottish. Been writing longer than I’ve been wearing big boy’s trousers.
In the first kind of Christmas, unsurprisingly, really sensible folk get exactly what they want.
Let’s call them “happy” for the sake of argument.
Life is good and Santa got the message.
This is the Christmas that ad agencies, clients and customers dream of.
The Christmas of dreams and profits. Where everything goes to plan and it snows right on cue on Christmas Eve.
The ghost of Jimmy Stewart even puts in an appearance.
Then there’s the second kind of Christmas. Where really excited, but often disappointed, folk get precisely what other folk think they’d like.
Let’s call them “re-gifters”.
They’re the ones who gush with joy right up until the moment they unwrap something they’d never buy for themselves in a million years.
There’s no Santa involved here.
He must have taken a wrong turning at Albuquerque.
Then there’s the third kind of Christmas. The kind reserved for the BILLIONS of folk who don’t celebrate Christmas at all.
But somehow don’t feel the worse for it.
They probably think the idea of flying reindeer and a laughing fat man in a red suit are just marketing gimmicks designed to part them from their hard-earned dosh. If they had any.
They might not be entirely wrong. But it makes a whole lot of folk from the first kind of Christmas very happy.
So yah boo sucks!
Then there’s the last kind of Christmas.
The fourth kind.

This is the Christmas that takes care of the bodies, hearts and minds of those who are broken and need putting back together again.
If possible.
This is the Christmas reserved for all those too ill…too poor…too hungry…too oppressed…too forgotten…too lonely…too depressed…too homeless…too unfortunate…too threatened…too angry…too devastated…too lost…too torn apart…and too much in pain to enjoy any damned Christmas at all.
These are the folk so far down the hole they can’t even see the light at the top anymore.
The fourth kind of Christmas is for them.
And it’s the one I reserve my biggest, strongest, warmest, most heartfelt Christmas wishes for.
Because they’re the folk who always need it the most…
