The four horseman of the confidence apocalypse: No 2 - how to stop feeling like a fraud

The four horseman of the confidence apocalypse: No 2 - how to stop feeling like a fraud

You know the feeling - you look around at everyone else in the room or on the zoom call and think, what am I doing here?

Everyone is so much more accomplished than me. I'm such a fraud for even taking up a chair.

You know that this is the little imposter talking to you from inside your head but what can you do about it?

1) Separate feelings from fact. You will recognise times that you feel stupid and tell yourself so. What you need to remind yourself is why you are qualified to do this task so be objective rather than subjective.

Quite often with the thing we fear the most, the opposite is true.

2) Talk about how you're feeling, whether that's with a colleague, friend or coach. You'll be surprised about their response to you. If you feel uncomfortable doing this, write it out in a journal. At least then it's out of your head freeing up valuable space.

While you're busy anxiously waiting to be called out for your lack of knowledge by others, they're busy anxiously feeling the same about you.

3) When you see that you're doubting your talents, welcome the imposter syndrome in. You can call it out, even give it a name but by recognising it allows you the opportunity to take a breath. Once you've done this, ask yourself what's really going on here.

What's the thought underneath the thought?

Stop thinking that external factors are responsible for your own success.

If you find yourself saying 'I'm just lucky', you're not. It's down to you, your personality and your talent that you've got to where you are.

That's within your control.

How does this show up for you? I'd love to know - pop your thoughts in the comments.
