Four Ears Leadership
Martin Kettelhut, PhD - Clarity Catalyst
To fulfilling even more of your truth
As leaders?(at work, home, in the community), we listen in four different ways:
"Listening for purpose, we listen not to external stimuli or other people, and also not to insecure, self-abnegating, or otherwise fearful thoughts in the mind, but instead to the heart, your connection to all. Knowing your purpose is seeing yourself in the fabric of life. This is crucial for a relational leader. Listening for purpose is listening for something timeless. Your reason for being here does not change--as contrasted with your reason for undertaking any individual act or project, which does change.
"Listening for presence includes being present to your thoughts, but it is not thinking. You listen for presence when you--as a relational leader--pay attention to eating, drinking, sleep, exercise, and practicing your trade such that you stay out of your head, understand the needs of others, and can serve both your own and their purpose.
"We are most familiar with listening for power. Power--as we will talk about it--is measured by your ability to get things done within a given time frame. A hockey team measures its power by how many more goals it scores than the opposing team within the three twenty-minute periods of the game. You measure your power as a relational leader when you observe, for example, how well you and the team assemble for a meeting by 10:00 a.m. or at selling widgets per business-quarter.
"Listen for passion is listening for enjoyment and fulfillment. What truly fascinates, enriches, and rejuvenates you and those around you? Passion occurs at the material or physical, the mental or psychological, as well as the social and spiritual levels of your being. Think of the cliché leader who gets more depleted every month because she's always busy and doesn't rest. She's not listening for passion." We will have more to say about the kinds of leadership-listening touched on in this excerpt, and much more fromLeadership as Relationwhen you join us for the three Leadership Workshops starting later this month!
