Now on to today’s topic…?The Four Deadly Sins of Project Management
There are mistakes you can make in your projects and operations, and then there are these four absolutely unforgivable deadly sins of project management. Commit any of these sins and you can be sure that your project?will?fail – so avoid them at all costs!
Not Having a Plan
When a project does not have a clear plan from the very start, then it cannot actually be considered a project. An effective project manager uses a project plan to define the overall objective of the project, specify all tasks that need to be accomplished, and estimate the time and budget that will be needed to complete the project.

Not Tracking Metrics and Progress
In order to see whether your project is on the right track or not, you will need to compare your estimates with the actual data you collect as part of the project. Tracking your metrics will ensure that you know if your project is on track, whether you're going to overrun the budget, whether your deadline will be missed, or if you're on the verge of overrunning both at the same time.
Lack of Transparency
Having transparency in a project team results in your team members feeling better and working better as well. In project management, transparency shows clearly how well or bad a project or process is performing. We’ve?written? extensively?on?this?because it’s one of the most important factors in executing successful projects.
Failing to Prepare for Risks
It is true that it is sometimes hard to foresee some issues in advance. But, with today’s risk management tools, there’s no excuse for missing identifiable risks before they cause trouble. As many project managers know, failing to predict potential risks can lead to major setbacks and drain your budget.
I have personally seen all of the above sins committed in organizations of all sizes, from small mom and pop operations to multibillion dollar enterprises. If you’re guilty of practicing these bad habits you should know that it’s not too late to change your ways. At Valens Project Consulting, we firmly believe that everything has a solution and will help you create a culture of quality and project management best practices that will ultimately increase your bottom line.
