The canal, which links the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, accounts for 5% of total global container trade, and some 46% of the trade from the US East Coast to East Asia. It is facing a severe drought due to the El Ni?o weather phenomenon.? ?
The authority that manages the canal has responded to low water levels by temporarily reducing both the number of transits and ensuring the weight of the cargo is suitable.

9 个月Those are not only the point of trade disruption. They are also point of 'emission increase'. With the shortest routes are closed, shipping opts for the longer ones. Hopefully, it could create more initiatives for the investments into green corridors away from the traditional routing. Which can benefit to regional development. But in reality, it is difficult to compare going via Panama or through the Drake straight. ??
