Are Founders Dying Sooner?

As a founder myself, I've often joked that entrepreneurship is taking years off my life. But recently, I've started to wonder if there's more truth to this statement than I'd like to admit. After diving into research, I've uncovered some alarming facts about founders' health that I feel compelled to share with my fellow entrepreneurs.

The Stark Reality: Founders and Mortality

A study that particularly caught my attention was conducted by the National Bureau of Economic Research. They found that entrepreneurs tend to die two years earlier than their employees [1]. This statistic hit me hard. Are we, as founders, inadvertently sacrificing our longevity for our passion?

Top Health Reasons Founders May Die Sooner:

  1. Chronic Stress: As founders, we're under constant pressure. A survey by the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index revealed that 45% of entrepreneurs report being stressed compared to 42% of "other workers" [2]. This chronic stress can lead to a host of health issues, including heart disease, high blood pressure, and weakened immune systems.
  2. Sleep Deprivation: I can't count the number of times I've pulled all-nighters for my business. Unfortunately, I'm not alone. A study in the Small Business Economics journal found that entrepreneurs sleep, on average, 6.7 hours per night, compared to the recommended 7-9 hours [3]. This sleep deficit can increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.
  3. Neglecting Physical Health: In the race to build our businesses, we often neglect our physical health. A survey by Groupon found that 42% of small business owners say they don't have time to exercise [4]. This sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of obesity, heart disease, and certain cancers.
  4. Mental Health Challenges: The entrepreneurial journey can be lonely and filled with ups and downs. A study by Michael Freeman et al. found that 72% of entrepreneurs self-reported mental health concerns [5]. Depression and anxiety, if left untreated, can have severe physical health consequences.
  5. Irregular Eating Habits: Skipping meals or relying on fast food is common among time-strapped entrepreneurs. A survey by Sage found that 33% of small business owners skip meals due to work demands [6]. Poor nutrition can lead to a weakened immune system and increased risk of chronic diseases.

How Founders' Health Differs from Non-Founders:

  1. Higher Cortisol Levels: A study in the Journal of Business Venturing found that entrepreneurs have significantly higher cortisol levels compared to non-entrepreneurs [7]. This stress hormone, when chronically elevated, can lead to numerous health issues.
  2. Greater Work-Life Imbalance: The same Groupon survey mentioned earlier found that 33% of small business owners work more than 50 hours per week, compared to just 5% of the general population working such long hours [4]. This imbalance can lead to burnout and associated health problems.
  3. Delayed Healthcare: A survey by Cigna found that 26% of small business owners have gone without needed medical care due to cost concerns, compared to 21% of the general population [8]. This delay in seeking medical attention can exacerbate health issues.

The Wake-Up Call:

These statistics are a wake-up call for me, and I hope they are for you too. As founders, we need to prioritize our health just as much as we prioritize our businesses. After all, what good is a successful company if we're not around to enjoy its fruits?

Moving forward, I'm committed to making changes in my routine. I'm scheduling regular health check-ups, setting strict work hours, and prioritizing sleep and exercise. I encourage my fellow entrepreneurs to do the same.

Let's start a conversation about founder health. How are you balancing your well-being with your business demands? What strategies have you found effective? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments.

Remember, taking care of ourselves isn't selfish – it's essential for the long-term success of our ventures and our lives.

Maybe startups should consider incorporating health checks and wellness programs as part of their operation.

I'd love to know more about these studies and research. Any links or references?

Makes you wonder if entrepreneurs should be investing more time in self-care and less time in endless working hours.
