#FounderLife
I am yet to work out if releasing this series of micro-blogs is more or less daunting than starting a business.
It is not often that I get told 'we don't hear enough from you', and yet, on those exact words from a shareholder, here I am, releasing my first Pulse article.
In 2014, at 25, I founded GapCap. Our basic premise is to make cash flow easy for growing UK businesses.
The snap to the right is of Jack and Paddy, employees 1 and 2 enjoying a cuddle in our luxurious first office. This must have been taken pretty close to day 1.
In the ensuing 5 years, we have funded over £350m and have nearly 500 clients on our system. It has not been plain sailing, and it continues to test every day. As any founder will attest, the self-doubt chimp keeps reminding me that it could all come crumbling down tomorrow (that would make a good read).
It is not often that I get told 'we don't hear enough from you', and yet, on those exact words from a shareholder, here I am, releasing my first Pulse article.
I am hoping that this will be read by more than simply my (ever-supportive) sister Jane, and I am hoping that those that do, will find the ins and outs of founding and running a business mildly interesting. I anticipate giving an (often stream of consciousness) insight into the ups and downs and am aiming to avoid the mundane. Against every instinct, I am going to try and avoid trying to flog the services of GapCap to the readers as well!
Expect everything from my own irrational anxieties (probably a good read) to the macro issues faced by a business trying to scale in an occasionally difficult trading environment (probably a less good read). I am hoping for it to be personal and to take the michael out of some of my historical (and likely, current) decision making, hopefully helping some other first-time founders to avoid some of the errors I made and giving the non-founder crowd what it wants - a good chuckle at my expense.
I am hoping to write weekly - we shall see...watch this space.
