As a founder, which sectors would be the best to startup?

While there isn't a one size fits all approach to this, there are definitely some macro trends that could be ridden. The sector of choice is context dependent and heavily influenced by the geography. I will look at key factors such as market need, labour supply, capabilities and competitiveness to suggest which fairly broad sectors would be interesting.

  1. B2B Enterprise Tech (India) : Driven by a high supply of extremely talented engineers, with the capability to scale both tech and labor, B2B enterprise tech is possibly the best market in India. Some of our biggest wins are Zoho, FreshDesk, MuSigma - and they all have the capability to build in India and serve the global economy. Enterprise solutions require customisation and productization - needing both labour and technology, India has both. It is a huge market that can do with a fresh perspective
  2. B2C ECommerce (US) : The United States has the best combination of marketing and technical talent that makes them the best at acquiring customers at scale. Various horizontals and verticals exist to serve the largest consumer economy in the world - legendary examples like Amazon, Uber, Airbnb are beacons for the capability of the ecosystem
  3. B2C FinTech (China) : With possibly the largest volume of transaction on eCommerce in the world, China has a huge opportunity to finance these transactions through technology. With deep capital markets, the largest banks globally, closed social ecosystems and strong cross functional talent - FinTech is a great place to be in as a Chinese startup. Ant Financial, Lufax and Tencent are disrupting the legacy finance players

Broadly, value extraction from data (aka ML, analytics) and machine intelligence are super hot sectors but few companies (Google, Facebook) have the capabilities and resources to really push the envelope. Data markets and data valuation will be a strong way forward to democratise building startups in these sectors - till then it will power with a select few.
