Foundation Models, Emergent Behavior, and How the Transformer Model has Impacted Healthcare
Foundational models are machine learning models that are trained on broad data and can be fine-tuned for specific tasks. These models learn to understand various aspects of the data such as its semantics, grammar, facts about the world, reasoning abilities, and much more. They are called "foundational" because they serve as a base upon which more specific, task-oriented models can be built, and because they form the backbone of most modern machine learning applications.
The transformer model is a type of foundational model that has made a significant impact across many fields, but most remarkably in healthcare. Introduced in the paper "Attention is All You Need" by Vaswani et al., the transformer model introduced the concept of self-attention, which has since been the foundation of many successful models in Natural Language Processing (NLP), such as GPT-4, BERT, and others.
What's interesting about the deployment of these transformer models is a concept called emergent behavior. Emergent behavior refers to complex, often unexpected, behavior or phenomena that arise from the interaction of components within a model. It is not pre-programmed or explicitly defined by the creators of the model but is a byproduct of the underlying interactions and rules. This behavior "emerges" from the system as a whole. It can lead to new, innovative solutions to problems, but it can also create challenges in understanding and predicting the behavior of AI systems.
These emergent behaviors could be beneficial in many areas such as reinforcement learning, where the system learns to perform an action from many simple interactions with its environment. However, they can also pose challenges for the safe and ethical use of AI, as the emergent behavior could be harmful or unpredictable. It's also part of why explainability and transparency are increasingly important topics in the AI field.

9 个月Inconveniently, we can neither anticipate nor rely upon benefits bestowed by emergent behaviors. That and the unpredictability you mention tends to dampen investor enthusiasm. I'd like to see transformers and broader foundation models benchmarked across application areas. Perhaps an independent organization like the Allen Institute for AI will develop infrastructure for curating and automating the evaluation of competing models. The industry needs a demonstrably capable, objective, trustworthy authority with the financial resources to sustain such a capability long-term.
