Foundation for Louisiana Launches the Solidarity Fund to Advance Racial Justice in Philanthropy

NEW ORLEANS, LA –?January 31, 2024 - The Foundation for Louisiana (FFL), known for its commitment to building a more equitable and stronger Louisiana, is thrilled to announce the launch of the Solidarity Fund. Supported with seed money from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, this initiative is a testament to FFL's dedication to transforming the philanthropic landscape to achieve racial justice, especially in regions historically impacted by racial disparities.

The Solidarity Fund aims to empower Louisiana-based nonprofits, focusing on those excluded from access to flexible funding due to systemic barriers prevalent in the Deep South, such as racism, sexism, classism, ableism, and heterosexism. This fund recognizes the need for these organizations to have access to flexible financial resources to make a substantial impact in their communities. The Solidarity Fund is a critical part of FFL's strategy to dismantle racial hierarchies and promote collective liberation and self-determination for People of the Global Majority.

“The launch of the Solidarity Fund marks a significant moment in our ongoing efforts in advancing racial justice throughout Louisiana,” says Charmel Gaulden, CEO & President of Foundation for Louisiana. “We are incredibly grateful for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation's continued support, which is pivotal in amplifying our impact. This fund is a testament to our collective commitment to racial justice, solidarity, and empowerment.”

Eligible nonprofits can utilize these funds for a variety of initiatives, including fundraisers, learning opportunities, convenings, community events, and awareness campaigns. The goal is to support activities that resonate with FFL’s vision of a society free from racial hierarchies and filled with collective liberation and self-determination for People of the Global Majority.

To be eligible, applicants must be 501(c)(3) organizations or have a fiscal sponsorship, and be based in Louisiana. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, with a recommendation to apply at least 60 days before the event. The maximum award is $25,000, with an average award of $5,000 per organization per fiscal year. Sponsorship requests must be for events occurring on or before December 31, 2024.

In alignment with FFL’s focus on racial justice, climate justice, and criminal justice, the Solidarity Fund will prioritize projects that embody the organization’s mission and strategic priorities, including support for arts and culture, economic opportunity, and community leadership. The Foundation for Louisiana is committed to leading the charge for racial equity in the Gulf South. Through the Solidarity Fund, FFL envisions fostering a more inclusive and equitable Louisiana, where the voices and needs of all communities are acknowledged and addressed.

That's incredibly inspiring! ?? Remember what Martin Luther King Jr. said, "The time is always right to do what is right." This initiative aligns perfectly with creating a just world. ?? Plus, as a token of solidarity in making impactful changes, there's an exciting sponsorship opportunity tied to setting the Guinness World Record for Tree Planting. Consider this a chance to further your amazing efforts: https://bit.ly/TreeGuinnessWorldRecord ?? Keep lighting the way!
