The Foundation of Great Hires – Trust, Values, and Accountability

Have you ever rushed through a hire, feeling the urgency to fill a position and hoping for the best? Many of us have, but here's the thing: hiring without clarity is like setting off on a road trip with no map. Sure, you’ll get somewhere—but will it be where you intended?

When we hire, we often focus on the basics—skills and experience. Yet, we forget to ask ourselves key questions:

  • Do we fully understand what this role really entails?
  • Have we clearly defined our company values, and are we hiring based on them?
  • Do we have a system in place to ensure those values are reflected in the work?

But even when we find the right fit in terms of skills and values, our job as leaders is far from over. Trust and respect are not automatic—they’re earned. And they are critical before we can expect any kind of productivity from a new hire.

Here’s the truth: building a relationship with a new team member is just as important as ensuring they have the right skills. Consider these key steps:

  1. Set Clear Boundaries: Do you understand your new hire’s personality? How are you helping them acclimate based on their unique traits?
  2. Provide Structured Feedback: Feedback should be based on the expectations you clearly laid out before hiring. Consistency is key. If things need to change, don’t just alter course—sit down and explain.
  3. Hold Accountability: Once feedback is given, it’s time to hold them accountable. Are they meeting the expectations? This is how you can tell if your team is engaged and productive.

Ever found yourself frustrated with an employee? Wondering why tasks weren’t completed or dreading a conversation? The problem often lies in the lack of clear expectations and accountability. The good news? You can change that today by stepping into true leadership—laying a strong foundation for your team.
