Foundation Engineering (Part 1) | Online course | RCC-STR-003

Foundation Engineering (Part 1) | Online course | RCC-STR-003

Foundation is one of the most critical components of any structure, as it transfers loads from the superstructure to the underlying soil. However, foundation failures remain a common cause of structural failures due to the inherent uncertainties associated with soil behaviour. In addition to geotechnical complexities, software applications for foundation design also play a vital role. Modern tools such as SAFE and STAAD Foundation Advanced, based on the finite element method (FEM), have become essential in foundation engineering. Therefore, understanding their working methodologies and limitations is crucial for ensuring safe and efficient designs. Another key aspect of foundation design is the interface between geotechnical and structural engineers. A strong collaboration between these disciplines can significantly enhance the quality of foundation solutions.

We have received numerous queries regarding a specialized course on foundations. In response, we are pleased to announce RCC-STR-003: Foundation Engineering (Part 1), commencing on 20-FEB-25. This course aims to address the critical aspects of foundation design, bridging the gap between software applications and fundamental engineering principles.

What to Expect in the Course?

  1. Finite Element Analysis of FoundationsIntroduction to foundation design using SAFE and STAAD Foundation AdvancedComparative analysis of results from both software against manual calculations
  2. Understanding the Geotechnical-Structural InterfaceThe importance of collaboration between geotechnical and structural engineersOverview of key IS codes related to geotechnical engineering
  3. Foundation Design Using SAFE (as per IS 456:2000)Hands-on design exercises and interpretation of resultsIf requested by participants, foundation design in STAAD Foundation Advanced as per ACI 318 will also be covered
  4. Case StudiesIsolated foundations, Combined foundations, Octagonal foundation for tall vertical vessels (Oil & Gas industry), Foundations for cantilever retaining walls, Foundations for transmission line towers, Annular raft foundations for chimneys, Raft foundations for tall buildings, etc.
  5. Enhancing the Quality of Geotechnical InvestigationsDiscussion on critical areas that can improve the accuracy and reliability of soil investigations

By the end of this course, participants will not only gain a deep understanding of foundation design methodologies but will also be equipped to develop in-house design procedures, checklists, and best practices for their organizations.

A detailed session-wise breakdown is provided in the course brochure.

Join us in this journey to master foundation engineering with practical insights and industry-relevant knowledge!

First and foremost, you have to understand soil mechanics since we are using #soil as an #engineering material. Unlike most other materials, the engineering properties of soil vary due to many factors. One of the biggest influencers of soil behavior is water. The same soil will behave differently if it is dry, partially saturated, or fully saturated. #FoundationDesign tools are great, but only if you know how to define the input properly. In my experience, many do not, and this is often why we have foundation failures. Understanding soil and groundwater requires a comprehensive #geotechnical evaluation of every site. This aspect of #sitedevelopment should not be minimized or overlooked. You may think you are saving time and money by going cheap at this stage. But you will pay exponentially more for it during the construction process with changed condition claims, change orders, redesigns, and delays in construction. I know this. I’ve seen this time and time again over many years in this industry. #GeotechnicalEngineering is not a commodity. It is an absolute necessity and should be approached professionally each and every time. #DoctorEd #TeamGarbin Garbin GeoStructural Group
