Last few weeks has been path defining in the history of Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) which managed Kubernetes.
CNCF was created by major cloud players to provide a central system around container and container orchestration with an eye on micro-services oriented architecture. It is hosted by Linux Foundation.
Kubernetes was created by Google and it is now a major part of Google Cloud Platform (GCP). As Google usually does, they gave it to open source, where it has gained momentum and in very short span of time, has become central point of container management.
Amazon which is the market leader in public cloud and have specific services to maintain docker containers was avoiding this project till now. Few weeks back, Microsoft joined the project and it was being speculated that Amazon will follow the path.
As per public information, both Amazon and Microsoft has committed to pay $350,000 annually for a seat on the board. This board take decision on the future path of project.
It has to be noted that CNCF manages many other projects apart from kubernetes, so it will be interesting to see if Microsoft or Amazon try to pitch some of their offerings through their decision making position on the board.
