For people struggling with mental health conditions their symptoms can seem intangible or abstract. That’s why, as a trained counselor, I was so excited to learn that researchers have developed a promising blood test for depression and bipolar disorder. For the 1 in 4 people who will suffer from a depressive episode, this test has the potential to bring many to lifesaving treatment.

This news couldn’t come at a better time. For many, a year of pandemic isolation has worsened mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. And the stigma associated with these very real diseases can keep many from seeking help.

We can act today to remove the stigma around mental health and empower those around us to seek help. Let’s take advantage of this Mental Health Awareness month to start discussions.

1.      Share your story. When we talk about our own struggles with mental health and addiction, we create space for others to do the same. We move from a whisper to real conversation, and we reveal a path for others to get help.

2.      Share resources. Many companies offer a robust employee assistance program (EAP). If you’re a leader in your organization, talk to all your employees about the resources available to them.

3.      Seek help. If you or a family member are struggling, take the first step toward help. Call your EAP or the National Helpline of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Groups like Al-Anon and Nar-Anon offer support to family and friends who are concerned about their loved ones struggling with addiction.

While scientific innovations offer promise for the future, there is great power in our words to both ask for help and offer hope. As is often the case with life’s biggest struggles, it’s a tremendous help to learn we’re not alone.
