We live in a fast-paced, always-on culture. Sure work-life balance is a popular espoused goal of many organizations. Yet many organizations create cultures where practising true work-life balance is difficult at best.
The Reality of the Modern Work Environment
We live in an era where technology has blurred the lines between work and personal time. The expectation to be constantly available can lead to burnout, a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress. According to the World Health Organization, burnout is a significant occupational phenomenon, impacting both employee health and organizational productivity.
Work-Life Balance as a Resilience Strategy
Resilience is often misunderstood as the ability to endure relentless workloads and stress. In truth, resilience is growing through challenges not white-knuckling your way through life. Resilience isn't just good for the individual, a Harvard Business Review article highlighted that employees who feel they have a good work-life balance work 21% harder than those who don't. This is a testament to the power of balance in boosting not just our personal well-being but also our professional efficacy.
