Fostering Your Resilience in the Workplace: 4 Ideas to Implement Now

We live in a fast-paced, always-on culture. Sure work-life balance is a popular espoused goal of many organizations. Yet many organizations create cultures where practising true work-life balance is difficult at best.

The Reality of the Modern Work Environment

We live in an era where technology has blurred the lines between work and personal time. The expectation to be constantly available can lead to burnout, a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress. According to the World Health Organization, burnout is a significant occupational phenomenon, impacting both employee health and organizational productivity.

Work-Life Balance as a Resilience Strategy

Resilience is often misunderstood as the ability to endure relentless workloads and stress. In truth, resilience is growing through challenges not white-knuckling your way through life. Resilience isn't just good for the individual, a Harvard Business Review article highlighted that employees who feel they have a good work-life balance work 21% harder than those who don't. This is a testament to the power of balance in boosting not just our personal well-being but also our professional efficacy.

Practical Steps Towards Achieving Balance

  1. Set Boundaries: Define clear boundaries between work and home. Refusing to check your emails after work hours or even turning off your phone can help you establish clear lines. You might consider creating a ritual to transition between work and home. Something as simple as changing out of your work clothes as soon as you get home can help shift your mindset and transition into a different.
  2. Fill Your Gas Tank: Taking care of your body, mind, and spirit, ensures that you have the fuel you need. Regular exercise, adequate sleep, and healthy eating habits are crucial. Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup.
  3. Seek Support: Despite social media, texting and all of the means we have to remain connected, our world is increasingly individualist. Prioritizing connection and cultivating community will sustain you through the challenging times.
  4. Reflect and Adjust: Regularly take time to assess your work-life balance. Be honest with yourself about how you're coping and make adjustments as needed.

Work-life balance isn't just a nice-to-have; it's a must-have for resilient professionals navigating today's demanding world. By prioritizing balance, you not only enhance your own well-being but also contribute positively to your work environments.

What strategies do you employ to ensure you have the tools required to be your best no matter what?

And with habits of excessive screen time set as a toddler, the addiction to dopamine is not only a distraction, but a dictator not only of our time, but of our mind. It also causes a shortcircuit in the brain where the neocortex is losing funcition, which includes critical thinking, creative problem-solving, impluse control and rational decision-making.
