Fostering Networks

I have often been asked why I spend so much of my personal time and energy on benevolent work with our alumni network and hospitality associations.
Recognizing the incredible value of a solid professional network is absolutely key. Having a robust network is a game-changer for career growth and success. Especially for women, who've clearly faced unique challenges in the professional arena, as well in hospitality. Building and maintaining a professional network can be a powerful tool, offering access to mentors and sponsors, work opportunities, and invaluable resources that pave the way for overcoming obstacles and thriving in our careers.
Through a professional network like our alumni association, connecting with other professionals who can serve as role models, who can provide insights is crucial. Fellow alumni share their wisdom, provide support, and offer insights based on their own experiences. For women navigating through career challenges and gender bias, having this connection, is even more relevant.
In my almost 30 years working in the larger hospitality industry, my various positions always came through referrals and connections rather than traditional job listings. By tapping into a professional network, we can discover hidden job openings that might have otherwise slipped under the radar. Plus, a strong network like ours can be a source of valuable recommendations and references, giving a significant boost to landing that dream job.
Interacting with other professionals widens our perspective. Engaging with colleagues helps expanding our own knowledge base, acquiring new skills, and staying up-to-date with industry trends and opportunities – crucial elements for career growth.

But let's not forget the sense of community and support. A network of like-minded individuals creates a safe space for sharing experiences, seeking advice, and finding encouragement. This community spirit boosts confidence, resilience, and overall satisfaction. I am eternally grateful for the time and advice my fellow hoteliers have shared with me.
By investing time and effort in building and nurturing our professional networks, we not only open doors to various opportunities but also foster that sense of belonging and empowerment. It's the key to overcoming any challenges, developing professionally, and reaching our career goals.
It's crucial for us all to actively engage in mentoring others within our community. And while we acknowledge the immense support that mentors can provide, there's a even more pressing need for fostering a culture of empathy and professionalism. Unfortunately, instances of unprofessional and unethical behavior, and a lack of empathy still exist (and interesting enough amongst women).
It's not just about personal success; it's about collectively shaping a professional world where we all, especially women, empower each other to reach greater heights.
And never forget: The hospitality world is very small. What goes around comes around.
