Taking care of one's physical and mental well-being is a personal choice often adopted during life due to circumstances or awareness. It involves mindfulness and the conscious determination to be bold and conscientious in our choices. The process does not merely entail prioritising our well-being; it is about ensuring that our thoughts and actions are based on preferences contributing to our progress and growth. It is also important to note that the process includes our efforts to promote value and development in our social, professional (workplace) environment as much as its culture.

One of the repeated questions I've been asked relating to self-love and self-care is to what extent integrating self-care practices can help manage personal life (including relationships) and develop oneself professionally. By incorporating a healthy and positive approach to self-love, the process of integrating desirable lifestyle choices for professional development becomes more accessible and practical. The sustenance promoted by personal productivity and consequential satisfaction with life enables one to be more aware of stressful factors impacting wellness. Let us see how focusing on excellence through self-love can influence our life and lives.

While focusing on excellence in personal life has its apparent benefits, the quest for professional perfection instead of excellence often has far-reaching consequences. Self-love promotes awareness of the impact of physical, emotional, and psychological parameters that can impede progress and cause burnout if ignored. By attending judiciously to a personal well-being routine, the realisation of taking care of wellness is aligned with mental clarity and productivity. Focusing on matters that need attention and ones that can be shelved becomes not a matter of convenience but prioritisation based on the goals to be achieved.

The emergence of this mindset creates the recognition and cruciality of boundaries (one's own included) as a prerequisite for professional as much as personal existence. Respecting and recognising our boundaries as much as we respect others is vital for personal and professional interaction and relationships. One critical area often neglected is maintaining the balance between work and life. Adhering to boundaries promotes more effective work management while increasing spending quality time with family or leisure time. Self-love in the workplace, apart from managing boundaries, also helps us comprehend the nuances of communication to understand the extent of expectations from others as much as theirs from us.

Developing the mindful awareness of appreciating one's achievements – personal or professional- is a process that emerges from self-love. Giving ourselves appreciation for an accomplishment is not easy – especially when all accomplishments may not receive recognition or gratitude. At the same time, observing areas of improvement as a juncture for further growth is also a variable that promotes professional as much as personal development. Cultivating the ability to appreciate ourselves during such times enables us to maintain a positive equilibrium about life and provide a continuous momentum to proceed with life with self-motivation.

The ability to self-motivate (and motivate others) is one of the critical reflections of effective wellness management. Attention to self-love does not merely impact ourselves; the impact can also be observed in how the mindset influences decision-making, stress management, workplace interactions, supporting a healthy workplace culture, and promoting resilience through inspiring practices of excellence through work. A healthy attention to self-love not only creates a sharper attention on diet and lifestyle choices but also gives attention to what is essential in life – including managing time more carefully. Through this awareness, not only will there be a more practical focus given to living well, but also on what creates satisfaction with life and enhances quality in existence. Furthermore, the self-worth that emerges from self-love can also improve productivity at the workplace, leading to a more harmonious existence and purpose.

Healthy care and consideration for one's welfare are also insightful revelations for workplace colleagues. The inspiration that can result in the process influences others to practice self-love to manage wellness and stress. The impact of this behaviour will further enhance workplace culture by creating awareness of the significance of a healthy, stable and collaborative environment in the organisation.

?It is critical for individual and societal wellness that the subject of "Self-love" be recognised much more than it is today for its role in nurturing and improving an individual's (and, in turn, a society's) development and progress. The process's success lies in the profound impact of an individual's care for oneself and the world they are a part of. Authentic and deliberate self-love is also a mindset that promotes the continuous focus on one's contribution and positive influence on others' well-being, creating an empathetic awareness of the value of sustainability and mindful existence.

Yes I agree 100%. While filling her journal a couple of days back, my daughter came across the question “who is your super hero?” And her answer pleasantly surprised me “I am my favourite super hero as I am the best”. It’s such an important thing to love yourself. Probably we miss it as we grow up.
