Beyond their impact on individuals, such problems significantly diminish productivity and are a kind of presenteeism. The estimated cost of this is US$2.5 trillion annually—which is projected to rise to US$6.1 trillion by 2030.
The workplace is a good place for employers to explore mental-health innovations that could benefit employees. However, it is crucial to tailor initiatives to individuals. What is effective in one context may not be so in another, making this especially important for multinational employers managing a global workforce.
For employers to support the mental-health needs of their employees across so many different geographic, cultural and economic contexts is, of course, a challenge. Despite this, multinational corporations should have the confidence to take the lead. If they get it right, they will have an opportunity to demonstrate the competitive advantage of having a healthy, more productive and engaged workforce.
