Fossil prices fall with successful fossil free growth
January data shows continued growth of solar and wind electricity generation in the European Union and a recovery of hydro and nuclear generation.
The capacity factor of the French nuclear fleet has recovered from around 70% in 2023 to 80% in 2024. Hydropower which dropped significantly in 2022 seem to be back at a normal generation level. Solar and wind growth continued by new capacity additions and managed to deliver more electricity in January than the EU nuclear power for the first time.
Fossil gas price for March is at 26 €/MWh, the lowest since the autumn of 2021 before the full Russian invasion of the Ukraine. Coal prices too, are at pre-invasion levels.
