Fossil-Fuelled Conference of Parties?

Fossil-Fuelled Conference of Parties?

Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges facing humanity today, and it is a complex issue that requires a multi-faceted approach to solving. One of the biggest obstacles in addressing climate change is the presence of fossil fuel lobbyists and industry leaders in positions of power. The appointment of fossil fuel lobbyists and industry leaders to key positions within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), such as the Conference of Parties (COP), can create a significant barrier to progress in addressing the climate crisis.

One example of this is the recent appointment of Sultan Al-Jaber, the CEO of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, as the President of COP28. This decision raises serious concerns about the ability of the COP to effectively address climate change, as it undermines the credibility and impartiality of the COP. Fossil fuel lobbyists and industry leaders have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo of fossil fuel use and production, and thus are likely to advocate for policies that prioritize their own interests over the need to address climate change. This creates a clear conflict of interest and can lead to the suppression of meaningful action on climate change.

Moreover, the presence of fossil fuel industry leaders in key positions within the COP can also have a chilling effect on the participation of other stakeholders, such as civil society organizations and developing countries. These groups may feel that their voices are not being heard and that their interests are not being represented in the COP process, which can lead to a lack of trust and participation in the process.

The appointment of fossil fuel industry leaders to key positions within the COP also undermines the credibility and impartiality of the COP. The COP is meant to be a neutral and independent body that is tasked with addressing the climate crisis. However, the appointment of individuals with a clear conflict of interest raises questions about the ability of the COP to act in the best interest of the global community and to make decisions that are based on sound scientific and policy considerations.

Furthermore, the fossil fuel industry has a history of lobbying against climate policies and regulations. This industry has spent millions of dollars to influence public opinion and policy, often spreading misinformation and denying the scientific consensus on climate change. Allowing fossil fuel industry leaders to hold key positions in the COP sends a message that the COP is not serious about addressing the climate crisis and that the voices of industry leaders are more important than the voices of scientists, environmental groups, and other stakeholders.

Solving the climate challenge, we face today is an arduous task, but it is made even more challenging by the presence of fossil fuel lobbyists and industry leaders in positions of power. The appointment of fossil fuel industry leaders to key positions within the COP undermines the credibility and impartiality of the COP, create a conflict of interest, and can have a chilling effect on the participation of other stakeholders. The COP must be independent and impartial, and the appointment of individuals with a clear conflict of interest should be avoided. The COP must prioritize the interests of the global community over the interests of the fossil fuel industry, if we want to make meaningful progress in addressing the climate crisis.

There is no room for Undemocratic domination and wealth-oozing conduct at any COP and biodiversity meeting for the oil industry. You have written a formidable article. But look at what little NGOs have achieved en mass. It’s upto brilliant scholars like you to tackle this game play. There is little concern for bio destruction All out to line their own pockets. I wish you luck, you have my full support

Until renewables can produce enough power to offset fossil fuel, there are few options. Until the power grid can deliver sufficent reliable power, electric options are out of reach and pose serious concerns for areas struck by disasters, natural or manmade (war). Oil is not king. Oil is reliable, available, and storable. Only real option is nuclear.

The message about Cop 28 is very clear. In terms of a declaration of the fact that OIL is KING and all those having other ideas better think twice. One of the reasons why the oil industry has more leverage than solar, wind et al, is simply because they employ lobbyist, economist, politicians, religious organization leaders (This is true), the United nations (Donations) and all other influential bodies to ensure that our addiction on oil is full strength and fanned through scientific studies and government supported studies. Defeating the oil CARTELS is not a walk in the park.

Interesting views there. We need champions/lobbyists who believe in the cause. Otherwise, the genuine efforts are futile
