Teachable Moment:?Turn 1:1 meetings into catalysts for action by focusing on goals and performance, while still maintaining rapport.
1:1 meetings with team members are critical.
They’re the building blocks of team dynamics and performance.
However, there’s an underlying issue that often goes?unnoticed.
These meetings can easily devolve into casual conversations without any substantial content or direction.
Yes, building rapport is important, but it shouldn’t overshadow the?primary?objective of these meetings, which is to facilitate progress and development.
You may find yourself discussing personal interests, office news, or non-work-related topics, but when the meeting concludes, you realize there’s been little to no discussion about performance, goals, or expectations.
This lack of focus during what should be a pivotal interaction is a missed opportunity.
Approach each conversation with a clear objective in mind.
Know what you want to achieve, and steer the conversation accordingly
Start with setting the?tone?- let your team members know that while the friendly banter is great, there are critical points that need attention.
Go over expectations explicitly and ensure there’s mutual understanding.
Once you’ve laid out the expectations, get?commitments.
Ask your team members what they will do to meet these expectations - make it concrete.

This will not only help your team members see a clear path ahead but will also give you reference points for future discussions.
Remember, it’s not about eliminating the friendly chatter – that’s important for building relationships.
It’s about ensuring that amid the casual, there’s a core of impact, a catalyst that drives your team members?forward.
Make every conversation count.
Keep learning,
Josh
