Fortnite Networking: 4 Hacks For Professional Networking From The Game

Over the years, various games have come and gone, many of which demanded their time in the spotlight. From GoldenEye to Pokémon Go!, throughout time, games that have offered a unique experience have found themselves shooting up the ‘total downloads’ charts and having their time as influential trend-setters. When Fortnite experienced 6x growth from 2017-2018, effectively putting them on the clock as influential trend-setters, the curious battle royale combination of building, fighting, and licensed characters, multiplied by the wonder of the internet set gamers ablaze!

One particular component of the game that has some very real-world applications is the need to network throughout the adventures. In the fast-paced world of professional networking, drawing inspiration from sources like Fortnite can lead to innovative strategies for building connections and advancing your career. Here are four Fortnite-inspired networking tips, along with practical hacks to level up your networking game.

1. Build Your Network Base

In Fortnite, establishing a strong base is essential for survival against adversaries. Similarly, in networking, laying the foundation of a robust network base sets the stage for future success.

Practical Hack: Leverage social media platforms like LinkedIn to connect with professionals in your industry. Invite these connections to a 20-minute ‘virtual coffee’ session.

Whether you’re an aspiring professional in school or a seasoned veteran, actively connecting with others in your industry and participating in discussions can help expand your network organically. Set a goal to reach out to at least one new contact each week, gradually expanding your network and diversifying your connections.

2. Team Up for Success

Fortnite emphasizes the power of teamwork in achieving victory. Similarly, networking often yields better results when you collaborate and team up with others.

Practical Hack: Seek out networking events or social media groups where you can meet like-minded individuals.

In addition to connecting with individuals in your industry, group gatherings also likely exist for your industry and niche within that industry. Whether collaborating on projects or attending weekly group calls, pooling resources and leveraging each other's strengths can help you achieve more significant outcomes and expand your network more effectively.

3. Communicate Strategically

Effective communication is critical both in Fortnite battles and networking interactions. Clear and strategic communication can help you convey your message effectively and build rapport with others.

Practical Hack: Elevator pitches, active listening, and effective follow-ups go a long way to winning in communication.

Craft a concise elevator pitch that highlights your skills, experiences, and goals before networking events or meetings. Practice active listening during conversations, demonstrating genuine interest by asking open-ended questions. Follow up with personalized messages or emails to maintain connections and continue the conversation beyond the initial interaction.

4. Adapt to Changing Environments

In Fortnite, players must adapt to ever-changing environments and challenges to survive. Similarly, networking requires adaptability to navigate different professional settings and circumstances.

Practical Hack: Choose 5 top voices on LinkedIn within your industry or niche. Then, click the Bell Icon at the top right of their profile to be notified of ALL posts from these people.

Staying informed about industry trends and developments to anticipate changes in your field is as simple as regularly exposing yourself to content others are already posting. When you sign up for regular notifications or newsletters, the consistent feed of information from trusted sources can serve as a passive way to stay flexible and adaptable to changing environments.

This are spot on. I play Fortnite with my daughter and she loves playing in squads with other online players. However she can't verbally chat with anyone. This means they have to communicate in a variety of ways to strategize and plan during constantly changing and often stressful situations. Communication involves: - Setting map markers to indicate to teammates where you're headed, just because I'm where I am right now doesn't mean this is where I want to be. - Friendly fire to let a teammate know something they did upset you. Maybe they picked up an accessory you wanted or they healed themselves when you needed healing desperately. - Emoting to let others know a variety of indicators like gimme a high five for a good round or just your favorite dance to celebrate more enthusiastically. - Bobbing up and down usually tells a player you like something while reloading a weapon that's already full causes your player to shake their head. This lets other players know you're basically saying no. These are just a few. We come up with new ways to communicate using the tools we have constantly, I might be the most creative communication I've seen in my real life.
