Synthetic fuels are well understood. Where do you get the energy to produce sufficient volume at low cost? Using expensive energy to produce cheap fuel is an unviable business model at the moment. Wind and solar is niether cheap nor abundant.

Lucas Di Grassi we must think that until we reach the massive electrification, our generation has the ethical commitment to cover the gap between the current state of the art and future claims of mass electrification. 200 years ago, humans used solid fuels to obtain their energy; in the last century, liquid fuels were the stars, although they were no less polluting in terms of carbon emitions. Today, we are witnessing the era of gases, much less harmful in GHG′s and much more affordable than the fuels used in the past. Currently there are numerous lines of research that work in the direction of taking advantage of the sources of methane generation (both fossil and biological) to obtain a whole range of useful molecules for daily life, from fuels to fertilizers. In parallel to the lines of research that go into the synthesis of fuels as mentioned here, there are others that go into the design of devices (such as flex engines for example) that allow the use of ethanol or methane as molecules. simple obtained from nature. Promoting these technologies implies, in one way or another, covering that gap to which I referred previously. Sometimes the innovative must intersect with the practical so that an improving option can be feasible.

EVs are more efficient after manufacturing, but if we account life cycle efficiency, from manufacturing to discarding, it is still quite disputable with current battery technology and market dynamics, which have been showing that cannot be underestimated. Concerning plant based ethanol, IMHO it is the current ‘premium’ solution when emissions are concerned, Brazil’s experience shows it is viable in Brazil’s scale, but it was never tried in global scale, which brings to me a disturbing question: the technology was there all the time, so why so many people had put all that effort in developing and marketing a significantly more complex solution, as is the case of EVs, instead of trying something simpler, effective, and immediately available? Should we follow the money?
