Former Stryker Instruments President Jim Heath Reflects on Medical Sales Leadership & Life Lessons

When you visit Stryker's website there are two people listed that the board and management thank for their contribution to the organization.

One of them is Jim Heath.

Jim Heath spent 27 years at Stryker and served as the President of the Instruments division.

During his six-year tenure as President, division sales grew globally from approximately $1.2 billion to $1.8 billion.

You can imagine how surprised I was when I messaged him in 2017 for book recommendations and he replied back with great advice and suggestions.

We finally met virtually this summer and I asked if he would come on the show and he agreed.

When I posted about it, there was an outpouring of former employees, mentees, and peers who commented on the post with paragraphs about how he had a positive impact on their career and life.

In this episode, Jim shares his journey and what he learned about leadership, strategy, and life over the past three decades.

He also shares untold stories about Stryker's historic rise, turbulence during the 2008 financial crisis, and what made the organization what is today.

Omar, this was such a great interview with Jim Heath! I am honored that he answered my question and now after listening, I have another! As a fellow cyclist, I am dying to know what he is riding (although knowing cyclists, he probably has at least 4 bikes!). ??

I had the privilege of working with “Coach” as his VP of Quality/Regulatory/Clinical for about five years. Jim did did not just talk about caring for people, he lived it. He didn’t just talk about being a humble leader, he demonstrated it. When we served meals to the homeless, he was in the back doing the dishes. When we worked on a house for Habitat for Humanity, he got covered in so much dirt and grime, I didn’t recognize him. When we faced some significant challenges in Quality, his guidance was always “Do the right thing for our customers.” He let me lead in my area, and backed me every single time. Especially when my decision would be detrimental to other parts of the business. As many of us would say: “I’d walk through a wall for Jim Heath”.
