Former Senator and Congressman Ben Nighthorse Campbell's Legacy of Service, Advocacy, and Empowerment: Celebrating Resilience and Creativity
Join us as we celebrate the resilience, creativity, and enduring spirit of Native American and Alaska Native peoples. Together, let's work towards a future where Indigenous voices are heard, honored, and amplified.
Ben Nighthorse Campbell is a former U.S. senator and congressman from Colorado, notable for being the first Native American elected to the Senate. Serving from 1993 to 2005, he was a prominent figure in American politics, holding key roles such as chairman of the Senate US Indian Affairs Committee. Born to a Native American father of Northern Cheyenne descent and a Portuguese immigrant mother, Campbell's early life was marked by adversity, including growing up in orphanages due to his parents' struggles with tuberculosis and alcoholism. Before his political career, Campbell was an Olympic judo competitor, deputy sheriff, and successful jewelry designer. Initially a Democrat, he switched to the Republican Party in 1995, serving in the Senate until his retirement in 2005. After leaving office, Campbell became a lobbyist and remained active in advocating for Native American issues. He is also remembered for his contributions to American Indian arts and the naming of Lake Nighthorse in his honor.
What is your personal and professional story?
My early life was marked by significant challenges. My father struggled with alcoholism, and my mother was chronically ill. These circumstances led to periods of instability, including time spent in foster care and an orphanage. These experiences, while difficult, instilled in me a deep empathy for those facing adversity. I wanted to use my voice and position to create a better future for others, particularly young people.
Driven by this desire, I embarked on a career in public service. I served in Congress, where I was proud to be recognized as the most effective legislator, with a higher success rate in passing legislation than any other member. This experience allowed me to make a tangible impact on national policy and address critical issues facing our country.
However, this demanding career came at a significant cost. I often sacrificed precious time with my family, and I still regret the missed opportunities to be present in their lives. While I’m proud of my accomplishments, I acknowledge the sacrifices made and hope to make up for lost time in the years to come.
Where does your passion to serve come from?
I wouldn't say it's a passion for 'service' in the traditional sense. It's more about a deep-seated desire to make a positive impact on the world. I've always been driven to address real-world problems and create lasting change.
One area I've been particularly passionate about is preserving water resources in the American West. As our population grows and climate change intensifies, safeguarding water supplies is crucial.
Additionally, I've dedicated significant effort to empowering young people, especially those from marginalized communities. By providing them with the tools, resources, and mentorship they need, we can help them overcome obstacles and achieve their full potential.
Ultimately, it's about creating a more just and equitable society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
How does GlobalMinded’s mission align with your goals?
