Astute businessman and former director of retail giant Dunnes Stores, Ben Dunne, died recently during a family holiday in Dubai. Born on 11 March, 1949, in Co Cork, Mr Dunne was a former director of Dunnes Stores, which was founded by his father, Ben Snr. In 1983, following the death of his father, Mr Dunne took over the running of the family supermarket empire and a period of significant growth followed. He played a leading role in the growth of the supermarket empire and became one of Ireland’s best-known business figures. Family ownership made Dunnes Stores an agile business that was able to move quicker than many of its rivals.

Tesco Ireland Opens Its First Store In Kilkenny, Creates 20 New Jobs

Tesco has opened its first store in Ferrybank, Co Kilkenny, creating 20 new jobs. To date, Kilkenny had been the only county in the Republic of Ireland without a Tesco store. At more than 3,800 square feet, the new store promises customers a modern retail experience and a wide selection of quality fresh local and Irish produce. Local suppliers such as?Flahavan’s?and Hughes Agriculture and Farming, who supply parsnip and carrots for stores nationwide, are among a host of local producers who will be found on the shelves in Ferrybank. Geoff Byrne, chief operating officer, Tesco Ireland, said, “This store is part of an €80 million investment across the country which will see the opening of new express stores, along with the upgrade of 50 other stores."

Irish Consumer Sentiment Edges Up For Second Successive Month

Muted Irish consumer sentiment edged slightly higher for the second successive month in November on falling energy prices and growing hopes that interest rates may have peaked, a recently published survey found. The Credit Union Consumer Sentiment index rose to 61.9 from 60.4 in October, when it rebounded from a six-month low. The index stood at 77 in February 2022, before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and dropped to a 14-year low of 42.1 in September 2022 amid a cost of living crunch, the data indicated. Speaking on the release of the October data and analysis, David Malone, CEO of the Irish League of Credit Unions, noted, "The special question in the November Credit Union Consumer Sentiment survey suggests that Christmas remains a challenging time financially and emphasises the importance of the support network provided by credit unions."

Bank of Ireland is warning consumers to be especially vigilant for fraud on Black Friday (24 November) and Cyber Monday (27 November). Black Friday and Cyber Monday are key online shopping dates for many consumers, which also means that fraudsters will be stepping up their activity. New research conducted by Bank of Ireland shows that customers spent 54% more online during Black Friday last year compared to a standard Friday, with clothing showing a 104% increase and electrical goods showing a 100% increase in sales. Nicola Sadlier, head of fraud, Bank of Ireland, stated, "Fraudsters like to inject an element of urgency into their offers or fake adverts, but don’t rush a transaction without checking things properly first."

Subway Names Jeff Shepherd As Chief Financial Officer

Subway has announced the appointment of Jeff Shepherd as its new chief financial officer. He will succeed Ben Wells who will retire at the end of this year after a 46-year career. Shepherd will report to chief executive officer John Chidsey and oversee Subway's global finance organisation, the company noted. He will be responsible for managing and optimising the brand's global financial performance and information security. Commenting on the appointment, John Chidsey, CEO, Subway, said,?"Jeff has a well-earned reputation for driving strong financial results for global brands, bringing nearly 30 years of financial and accounting experience to our organisation."
