Formal Launch of AED in Norfolk Square Gardens

Norfolk Square Gardens is now home to a critical resource—a fully automatic defibrillator (AED)—designed to enhance the safety of our community. The formal launch of this life-saving device marks a significant step forward in ensuring that we are better equipped to respond to medical emergencies in our local area.

This project was made possible through the support of Westminster’s Hyde Park Councillors, and we are grateful for their contribution in ward budget funding to purchase the AED. We would also like to thank Westminster Parks who provided valuable assistance in facilitating the installation.

The motivation behind securing this device followed the tragic loss of a life last year on London Street due to cardiac arrest. This incident highlighted the urgency of having easily accessible medical equipment available for public use. Cardiac arrest can strike without warning, and immediate intervention is crucial. Without rapid defibrillation, survival rates drop significantly with every minute that passes, but when an AED is used promptly, survival rates can increase to as much as 74%.

Since the AED was installed, the London Ambulance Service has already requested its use three times now, underscoring its importance in our community. With the AED now in place, we are better prepared to respond quickly to future emergencies.

At the launch event, Dave Flynn from EVERY SECOND COUNTS provided a demonstration on how to use the AED and administer CPR, highlighting the importance of public awareness and training. Mr. Flynn also helped the BID with bleed control kit, which will be co-hosted alongside the defibrillator, further enhancing our capacity to manage emergency situations in the area.

The installation of this AED is an important development for Norfolk Square Gardens, ensuring that residents, visitors, and businesses have access to critical equipment in case of a medical emergency.

This launch marks reflects the BID commitment to public safety, and we are confident that this addition will benefit the area for years to come.
