This picture was taken in a swampy area somewhere in Brokopondo, Suriname.

Form fits function

Walking palms (Socratea sp.) grow stilt roots, to support them while growing on soggy soil in swamps. In case of a treefall the damaged palm grows from these stilt roots. The latter resembles the palm to walk away from its original location.
