Thank you for continuing your learning journey in this 5-part series, where I share key skills from my popular Pluralsight course, "Navigating the Challenges of Change in Your Work Environment."
Let’s dive into the next step toward mastering change together! ??
Choose to Change
Our leaders can pave the road for change, but they can’t walk it for us. The choice to move forward is ours.
Too often, as humans, we focus first on the challenges we’ll face when a new change is introduced into our environment. However, when we intentionally pause and consider all the personal benefits that come from embracing change, the journey becomes exciting. We begin to recognize the power it has to fuel our motivation, foster a greater sense of purpose, and empower us to thrive in our careers. How cool is that?
Embracing Learnability: A Key to Thriving Through Change
The first critical skill for building our change-readiness muscles is learnability. In the tech world, we often hear this term associated with AI—referring to an AI system’s ability to analyze data, identify patterns, and improve performance over time. But what does learnability mean for us as humans navigating change?
For people, learnability is about the capacity to quickly acquire and apply new knowledge, skills, and behaviors. When we embrace learnability, we enhance our ability to adapt to change, identify opportunities in patterns and trends, and become more agile in dynamic environments.
Being learnable isn’t just about processing information quickly—it’s about maintaining an open mindset, being willing to take calculated risks, and fostering a desire to grow both intellectually and emotionally. It’s this combination of curiosity and action that empowers us to thrive in a world of constant change.
So, ask yourself: Are you actively cultivating your learnability to meet the challenges of today’s fast-paced world?
Learnability Quotient: Why It’s the Next Big Thing in Corporate Success
Because of the growing need to embrace learnability to adapt and thrive—both as organizations and as individuals—the term Learnability Quotient (LQ) is quickly becoming a corporate buzzword, almost on par with IQ and EQ. Yes, you heard that right—your LQ might soon be just as important as your IQ.
Now, before you roll your eyes, let’s put it into perspective. Our world is changing at an unprecedented pace, and employers are seeking team members who are committed to continuous learning and development. Companies need employees who can keep up with the rapid pace of change because how we do what we do today will almost certainly not be how we do it tomorrow.
Learnability: Wait, What Does That Even Mean?
Learnability is gauged by our level and interest in gaining further knowledge to enhance our current skills and capabilities.
I today's ever-changing work environments, learnability is the hot ticket to success!
The Future of Jobs study, reported in the recent World Economic Forum’s report, reveals that up to 65% of the jobs Generation Z will perform in their careers don’t even exist yet. Additionally, up to 45% of the activities people are paid to perform today could be automated using current technology.
This doesn’t necessarily mean there will be fewer jobs, but it does mean new jobs will require different skills. The same report estimates that, in less than five years, 85 million jobs may be displaced due to shifts in the division of labor between humans and machines, while 97 million new roles may emerge. It’s reassuring to see some balance in those numbers.
However, as a result, 40% of workers will need to learn new skills just to stay relevant in their current roles. This underscores a massive shift, showing that employability is no longer about what we already know but about our capacity to learn.
I think we can all agree: embracing learnability and committing to a life of continuous learning is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity for staying employed.
Virtual speaking has been my sweet spot this past year, and one of my most requested topics is "Become More Agile in the Face of Change by Developing Your Learnability Quotient." Lucky for me, it’s also one of my absolute favorite subjects to talk about
The #1 Question I Get Asked after Speaking on This Topic
How do I measure my level of learnability?
To answer this question, I created the 'Learning Latitude' Self-Discovery Quiz—a tool designed to help you assess your learning commitment level.
Take a moment to reflect on the questions tied to each learner's level. No one knows you better than you know yourself, and this self-reflection quiz will help you pinpoint your starting point.
Why is this important? Identifying where you are now is the first step to leveling up your learnability and taking your growth to the next level.
Are you ready to elevate your game? Let’s get started!
Embracing learnability is no longer a luxury but a necessity for employment.
