Forget about sustainable resolutions for 2023

As we enter a new year, many of you will be reflecting on the past and making resolutions for the future.??One area that many people are looking to improve upon is sustainability.?

We know that 80% of new year’s resolutions fail, so what about instead of the big resolutions we all commit to adopting some simple changes that will help the environment and also ease the burden on our pockets??

7 Sustainable New Year's habits to help the environment and your wallet

Here are some habits that you may want to consider incorporating into your daily routine in 2023

  1. Monitor and reduce your energy and water usage: Small changes can have a big impact on your monthly energy bill. Consider switching to energy-efficient appliances, turning off lights when you leave a room, and using natural light as much as possible. If possible consider installing solar panels. Say goodbye to long baths and opt for showers (no more than 5 minutes), turn off the tap while brushing your teeth and use the quick wash cycle of the washing machine, 90% of the time it is good enough for clean laundry.
  2. Eat less meat:?Cutting back on meat consumption can be good for both your health and the environment. Plan your meals carefully and try incorporating more plant-based options. In 2023, consider reducing your consumption of fish and meat even further.
  3. Increase the use of reusable products:?Reusable water bottles and keep cups are a great start, but there are many other products that can be used multiple times instead of being thrown away after one use. Consider washable makeup remover pads, cloth instead of paper towels, and period pants instead of disposable pads or tampons.
  4. Use more environmentally-friendly versions of products:?There are often more sustainable alternatives to the products we use every day. Experiment with washing powder sheets instead of liquid detergent, wooden interdental sticks instead of plastic ones (personally I had less luck with these, if anyone comes across a good brand please let me know), and natural cleaning products instead of harsh chemicals.
  5. Buy used before new:?Check first that you really need something before buying it. Instead of buying new items, consider looking for gently used options on apps like Wallapop or Vinted, or at your local charity shops. My friends and I regularly update our wardrobes by swapping clothes, anything leftover goes to charity shops or associations. Not only will you save money, but you'll also be keeping these items out of landfills.
  6. Reduce car usage:?Try to walk, bike, or take public transportation as much as possible instead of driving. If you must drive, consider carpooling or investing in an electric scooter to decrease your carbon footprint.
  7. Start composting:?If your area doesn't offer food waste separation, consider starting a home composting system. Not only will it reduce the amount of garbage you send to the landfill, but it will also provide you with a continuous supply of fertilizer for your plants.

By making these small changes, you can significantly decrease your environmental footprint and save money in the process. Happy New Year!
