My Early Journey: Learning to Overcome Limits
Growing up in a poor family in Cambodia, survival was the daily focus, not dreams. Despite our struggles, my parents, who never had a chance to learn to read or write, always reminded me that education could open doors.? Public school was free, so I dedicated myself to my studies from first grade through high school. Although my parents could not help me academically, they stressed how important schooling was for my future.
However, college posed a new challenge. My parents repeatedly told me they could not afford it. They simply did not have the money. Yet my desire to continue learning refused to let me stop. While researching possible options, I discovered government scholarships. That single piece of information fueled my efforts: I studied day and night, determined to graduate with high marks.
When I learned I had earned a full scholarship to my chosen university, a wave of relief and disbelief washed over me. It felt like a dream come true.
It was a turning point that proved a simple idea: if you persist long enough, you can uncover opportunities that seem hidden at first.
A New Ambition: Studying in Japan
After finishing my undergraduate degree, I started thinking about my next big challenge and quickly realized I wanted to pursue a master’s degree in Japan. I had long admired Japan for its deep cultural heritage and the way tradition coexists with innovation. I believed that immersing myself in this environment would expand my worldview, push me to grow academically and personally, and open doors to new opportunities. Yet again, money was an obstacle. The cost of living and studying abroad seemed out of reach. My only realistic path was to secure the highly competitive Japanese Government Scholarship.
I turned down a job offer after college, a decision some deemed reckless. But I couldn't shake the vision of studying in Japan. I dedicated a year to preparing for the scholarship exams, exploring every possible avenue.?

During that time, I volunteered at an IT center at my university. I had hoped to gain experience, but sometimes the way appears only after you start moving. Through this work, I connected with people who mentioned a partnership between my university and a Japanese institution. This collaboration offered Japanese Government Scholarships to selected students. Hearing about this felt like a revelation, so I applied. A few months later, I was notified of my acceptance. This experience left me convinced that determination, combined with consistent effort, can guide you toward answers that once seemed out of reach.
This was yet another confirmation: when you truly want something, you will find a way, even if it means carving out a path where none existed before.
Reflections on Success and Determination
Looking back, I see a pattern. Success hasn’t come from following a set roadmap—it’s come from my relentless determination to create one. Both times—first for college, then for Japan—I didn’t know the “how” when I started. But I knew the “why.” And that was enough.
If my journey has taught me one enduring lesson, it is that possibilities expand the moment you commit yourself fully. Rather than waiting for a perfect set of instructions, move forward, ask questions, and keep your eyes open for any opportunity—big or small. When your determination is unwavering, and you keep exploring every angle, those hidden paths start to reveal themselves. Because once you commit with unwavering determination, nothing can stop you. Where there is a will, there is always a way.
