Forget Sales Forget Product – Why should hiring be your number one priority as a CEO?

“I’d rather interview 50 people & not hire anyone than hire the wrong person’ – Jeff Bezos

Recruitment is a number one priority if you are looking to accelerate your business growth, become increasingly agile & remain competitive.?You may have a fantastic established product, solid business strategy & marketing plan – without people you have no one to execute the strategy & plan. You’ve worked your way up to becoming CEO & naturally your priorities have changed driven by the business needs. You no longer have time to be involved in the day to day activities, this is why it’s important to prioritise hiring; hiring someone you can trust to fulfil the job role without the requirement of micromanaging. Hiring people who have skills in areas you don’t is key in growing your business & laying down future foundations.?

Talent is defined as ‘natural aptitude or skill’… is talent natural? Is it learned? Is it a mix of both? Talent is instrumental to not only individual success & group success but ultimately organisational success.

As the hiring market is currently candidate driven, building a company culture is important in 2022 to attract a high calibre of talent. A strong company culture attracts better talent & more importantly retains talent in a highly competitive market. When employees/candidates feel a sense of belonging & their individual values align with their employer values, workers are more likely to stay around long term. That being said smaller companies & startup’s have more constraints & fewer opportunities, so building the right team has greater significance.?

To protect your culture you must continue to hire the right people, hiring someone who is a bad fit for the business could jeopardise everything you’ve worked hard for to create your business.?

Knowing when to hire is not easy when you’re trying to balance staffing levels with business growth objectives without overspending, but it is imperative to business success. Things to consider:?

What happens when you neglect hiring?

  • Tension in the workplace
  • Negative impact on company culture
