Forget Musk and Ackman—DEI is actually pretty popular among workers
You’ve seen the headlines over the past few months. Elon Musk doesn’t like it. Neither does Bill Ackman . It was even blamed (without evidence or merit) on some corners of the internet for the attempted Trump assassination .?
But despite a small chorus of prominent critics, DEI—short for diversity, equity, and inclusion—is actually pretty popular, according to Edelman’s 2024 Trust Barometer report on business and racial justice. Around 60% of people surveyed want DEI programs in their workplace, and demand is up 9% from 2022—back to where it was during the height of America’s race reckoning in 2020.?
But perhaps the most interesting part of this data is how widespread this approval is. DEI enjoyed an uptick across different race, gender, and socioeconomic groups. And workers at companies with more DEI programs felt an increased sense of belonging, whether they identified as Republican, Democrat, or Independent.?
“There is shared understanding and recognition of the benefit of this work to individuals across various demographics,” says Trisch Smith, global chief diversity, equity & inclusion officer at Edelman, a PR and marketing consulting firm. “That it’s not only a select few, or certain communities who are in support of the work.”?
So managers and aspiring leaders take note: the backlash may appear to be in full swing, but the data says something different. And as people become exasperated with other avenues for change, they’re increasingly looking to workplace leaders to take action.?
Leadership Tip of the Week ??
Forget about your title or your direct manager, if you want to get ahead. That’s the counterintuitive advice from Jane Edison Stevenson, Korn Ferry’s global vice chair, board and CEO services, writes Fortune ’s Ruth Umoh . Instead, aspiring C-suiters should focus on learning every aspect of the company, and developing their capabilities. “This creates a mindset of ownership, which is very different from just achieving a label,” she says.

3 个月One shouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater. DEI is well-intentioned, like many laudable initiatives, but when overdone, it defeats its purpose. If the purpose of DEI is to engender diversity in the workplace, in part to stop or reduce the impact of racism, what you don't want is to become racist against white people. It's reminiscent of female equality and feminism, which have taken a foothold in society. In many cases, rather than just equality, it may seem to some that role reversal is the case. This then goes on to breed resentment. No "good deed" goes unpunished, particularly when the deed is overdone.

It's good for business and good for people. According to McKinsey, D&I Global Market Report, Peoplemanagement in a report by LinkedIn: ? Organizations in the top quartile for ethnic diversity have a +36% likelihood of financial outperformance. ? Diverse companies earn 2.5x higher cash flow per employee. ? Inclusive teams are over 35% more productive. ? Diverse teams make better decisions 87% of the time. But more importantly, we're all human and we all deserve to be treated as such. As workers demand better corporate environments, the companies who answer the call will reap the rewards. #DEI #CelebrateDiversity #EqualityForAll #InclusionMatters
