In previous editions of #ForensicFridays , we emphasized the importance of effective communication of forensic science by forensic experts. This led me to think about the role of media in reporting on forensic science. Given that even forensic scientists often struggle to communicate scientific concepts effectively in court, it is reasonable to wonder how journalists, who work under tight deadlines and may have limited background knowledge of the subject matter, are able to accurately report on forensic science.

The media plays a critical role in providing factual and objective information to the public, particularly in the context of how DNA profiling and DNA databases are used in criminal justice investigations and humanitarian efforts. Without a proper understanding of forensic science, there is a risk of misinformation and sensationalism, which can shape public perceptions of these important systems. Therefore, it is essential for journalists and media professionals to have a basic understanding of forensic science and its applications.

Journalists can achieve this by attending training sessions, workshops, or briefings on forensic science, consulting with forensic experts, and seeking out credible sources of information. By being properly informed, they can ensure that they report on legal proceedings and events using forensic evidence accurately and responsibly, thereby upholding their crucial role as providers of accurate information and watchdogs of society. Unfortunately, such opportunities for training are rare, if they exist at all.

?To help address this problem, we have partnered with UNODC and International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC , and Dr Nechama Brodie from the Wits Centre for Journalism , to host an online, media-only informational workshop on June 7, 2023. The workshop is designed to provide journalists with a better understanding of forensic science and its applications. Details of the workshop are provided below and I encourage you to share this link with your press contacts to join this important conversation.

As genetic genealogy is being used more and more in criminal investigations and for the identification of human remains, it was encouraging to read that the Investigative Genetic Genealogy Accreditation Board (IGGAB) has released a draft of proposed standards for investigative genetic genealogy (IGG), available for public comment until May 30, 2023. Feedback during the public comment period is crucial to shaping the future of the field. Read more about how to conribute to this important publication below.

SPOTLIGHT ON HIDS2023

FEATURING ONE OF OUR AMAZING DNA CRUSADER'S!?

With less than two weeks to go before HIDS2023 when we will hear from the dynamic Dr. Kizzie Shako about her role in the SAK (Sexual Assault Kit) Global Donation Project, we find out why this project is so important and how other regions in Africa can get involved.

Why is the SAK Donation project important? This global project emphasizes the importance of taking an interdisciplinary approach to enhance justice through DNA evidence. The project brings together different fields to address various aspects of the justice system: From the criminology perspective, the role and impact of forensic evidence in the criminal justice system are studied, including how it can transform responses to crime and enhance confidence in the process. Additionally, DNA evidence can act as a deterrent to future offending. The project also considers the survivor perspective, recognizing the challenges survivors face in accessing justice. From a scientific perspective, the project ensures that innovation is fit for purpose and implemented effectively. Lastly, the project focuses on the legal framework for DNA evidence, databases, and the role of evidence in the prosecution and defense of cases, highlighting the importance of a comprehensive understanding of the law in the effective use of DNA evidence. By taking an interdisciplinary approach, the project seeks to improve the use of DNA evidence in enhancing justice on the Continent.

Where did it all begin?

This project is a joint collaboration between DNAforAfrica, a Texas Hospital, a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) Jennifer Degner, BSN, RN, CA-SANE, SANE-A in the USA, international human rights agencies, survivor advocates, rape crisis centres and government FSL's as well as a UK-based criminologist researching the impact of DNA evidence on the justice system. Read more here.

What will it achieve? This incredible project has gained global recognition in its efforts to help low resource environments in Africa gain access to sterile DNA swabs, drying boxes and tamper-proof evidence bags required for the minimum standard of evidence collection from sexual offence cases, while maintaining the preservation and chain of custody of evidence.

How can other regions in Africa get involved?
