“Good morning. Do you have an appointment?”

Imagine you have spent thousands of dollars and scores of hours obtaining, signing, notarizing and then, apostilling?documents. Then, after everything has been handed over to your legal representative, you are told, in the “11th” hour, that one needed to be redone?

?

This happened to us this past week, just as we were preparing to drive down to the Ottawa region, visit a cousin and some friends, before meeting up with our daughter in Kingston to load up her belongings and begin the trek west.

?

To make matters worse, our Ontario service told us they would not be able to handle it. The only method would be to drive to Kingston, get our daughter to sign it in the presence of a notary, then take the document and have the Panamanian Embassy authenticate it.?

?

Assuming that goes well – make sure it gets couriered to our lawyer in Panama before Christmas….

?

Well, with only a day to make this happen, we spent Sunday evening in the Nation’s Capital, to be sure we arrived first thing the office was open.

?

Panama’s Embassy in Ottawa is nothing grandiose. An 8th floor office suite in one of the many buildings a couple of blocks from Parliament Hill.

?

We were greeted warmly and then asked if we had an appointment. We said no, we did not but we had a simple request? - we needed a document authenticated for our daughter.?

?

This was followed by much discussion between the receptionist and another staff member. They were not certain they could do it. And certainly not today. Could we come back tomorrow? Or send a courier waybill to them if we could not?

?

In the end, seeing how they really weren’t that busy and we were physically present, polite but with a very firm deadline, our request was completed in just 1 hour!

?

With all the hi-tech we have in our lives, this story proves that old-school, physical, face-to-face meetings can be far more effective in helping you get what you want.

?

And if one of those wants is more clients, then good old networking, when done properly, is still one of the most powerful strategies to attract them.

?

Here’s how to do it.

Grab your coat, hop in your car, and head to where your ideal clients are gathering. But before you do that, let’s talk mindset. If networking makes you feel like you’re walking into the lion’s den, you’re not alone. Shifting your perspective is crucial. Try this: envision yourself as the cohost of any networking event you attend. Your mission? Think like a connector. Be someone who makes sure everyone feels comfortable and gets the opportunity to meet someone valuable. When you approach the event with this mindset, the pressure to “sell” yourself diminishes, and your focus shifts toward serving others. Start your conversations with an open, helpful demeanor. Whether it’s offering someone a drink or showing them where the restrooms are, small gestures can go a long way in breaking the ice.?

Then, take it a step further by asking: “I’d love to help connect you with others here. What kind of person would you like to meet?”?

This opens up a dialogue about their needs and positions you as a valuable resource. Remember, enjoyable networking is all about reciprocity. While you’re making these connections, don’t forget to guide the conversation toward setting up an appointment with potential clients.
