Foreign Editor's Five
This week I’ve been thinking about the IDF and what happens when an aura is shattered. In Israel it is often present, from checkpoints to off-duty soldiers in their fatigues. This high tech citizen army, vaunted at home for winning fast against the odds, now stands accused of moral and military failures in the quagmire in Gaza. There are plenty of theories about what went wrong from bad political leadership to AI-based targeting. What I found surprising is how much indiscipline is to blame. The best quote from our story is from a general worried that a obsession with Hamas body counts is a mistake. “I don’t want to be Westmoreland!” he exclaimed, referring to an architect of America’s disaster in Vietnam.
