The Forecast - #3 July 2023

"Welcome to another edition of The Forecast, our monthly digest on all things small charity sector.

This month we’re wrapping up another funding round and will soon be announcing our latest cohort of charities – stay tuned, as we’ll be posting all about it over on?LinkedIn?and?Twitter.

Last month we celebrated small charity week – I was delighted to join a panel of other funders to talk about how we can better support small charities.?I also wrote a piece in defence of small charities, debunking the ‘inefficiency myth’ that surrounds them – more on that below.

Finally, our events calendar has been extremely full this month – from networking dinners for our portfolio charities to seminars and panels, it’s been great to hear from charity leaders and advocates alike. And July is no different, so read on to find out what we have lined up this month."

The Inefficiency Myth: Debunking a damaging small charity stereotype

It is a common misconception that small charities are inefficient - that they replicate services and make poor use of resources.?But these accusations, heard from?business, government and even some charity sector figures?alike, are damaging misconceptions that strangle innovation and hurt a sector already struggling.?In our latest blog, founder and CEO Mary Rose Gunn debunks the ‘inefficiency myth’ and outlines the reasons why we must all dig a bit deeper to understand where the real issues lie in the small charity sector.

Community building amongst small charity leaders

We know that it can be tough and sometimes lonely running a small charity.?That’s why we set up our peer-to-peer network to give the small charities we fund a sense of community. Throughout the year, we’re running dinners for our grantees in Cambridge, London, Manchester, Newcastle and Leeds.

Last month we brought together our Cambridge charity cohort for a dinner -?it was great to see these inspirational leaders get together to share advice, challenges and make useful connections for peer support and learning.

?“It was such a lovely thing to do and I shared and learned so much!”

“So many interesting learnings and encounters.”

“It was a really fun evening and great to talk to people. We would be up for meeting on a regular basis to share ideas, advice and experience. So useful, loved it!”

At the Forefront: Grow Cardiff on Sustainability?

FRIDAY 14TH JULY, 1PM?

In the second of our online interviews 'At the Forefront',?we are delighted to welcome Isla Horton, CEO of Grow Cardiff, to discuss all things sustainability.

Grow Cardiff is an award- winning charity that started in 2015, when a group of locals came together to make a lasting difference to the health and wellbeing of their neighbours and friends, through community gardening. The group seized an opportunity to challenge local inequalities, by transforming uninspiring urban plots into buzzing hubs that bring people closer to nature.?

We’ll be sitting down with Isla to talk about the impact Grow Cardiff has had on the community, how she started the organisation and what we can all do to help sustain inspirational green spaces in our areas.?
