Ford's Electric Leap: F-150 Lightning's Off-Road Ventures and High-Performance Switchgear
EV cars have not always been associated with the words “rugged” and “versatile.” That makes its transition from urban to off-road capabilities all the more exciting. The newly unveiled Ford F-150 Switchgear has revved its way onto the scene, smashing down common perceptions about the limitations of EVs.
The Switchgear is a high-performance, off-road-oriented demonstrator developed in collaboration with drift racer Vaughn Gittin Jr. and his RTR Vehicles team. So, as you can imagine, it is built to push the very boundaries of electric off-roading.
While a one-off, it gives us a fascinating insight into the potential and limitations of electric trucks in off-road settings. Plus, it brings with it the F-150’s pedigree as a symbol of American automotive heritage to the EV space.
The Ford F-150 Lightning - Under the Hood
福特 , EV, and off-road fans have been anticipating this moment since Ford CEO Jim Farley gave us a teaser via a Tweet in February 2023. At the time, we only got a glimpse of its front bumper, but now we get to see it in real action.
First, let’s start with the specs. And, boy, are they impressive.
The Ford F-150 Lightning comes in two versions: the standard model and the high-performance Switchgear demonstrator. The standard model features a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive system. It also comes with a choice of battery sizes, delivering a range between 230 to 300 miles.
It has a payload capacity of up to 2,000 pounds, making it suitable for everyday use and light off-roading. It also comes with a more reasonable tire configuration, featuring 33.23-inch Nitto NT420V 305 / 55R20s.

The Switchgear, designed for extreme off-road conditions, includes modifications like a rugged suspension, 37-inch off-road tires, and reinforced bumpers and skid plates. Not to mention the fact that it’s fitted with 37-inch Nitto Ridge Grapplers, suitable for hardcore off-roading. This version, while not available for sale, is a showcase of Ford’s ability to combine electric power with demanding off-road performance.
The Lightning's design, with a focus on all-wheel drive and torque delivery, follows cues from other electric off-roaders like the Rivian R1T. For now, additional modifications like suspension lifts or even larger tires would dent the range and performance of the standard lightning model. However, the Switchgear demonstrates the continued progress in making EVs more versatile.
Its dual electric motors provide all-wheel drive, delivering immediate torque—a serious boost for off-road enthusiasts. Testing at Holly Oaks ORV Park near Detroit, a renowned off-road venue, the F-150 Lightning XLT proved its ability to navigate a variety of terrains, from steep dirt hills to concrete stair steps and rock gardens.
The Switchgear joins Ford's lineup of high-performance concept vehicles, such as the SuperVan 4.0 and 4.2, the Mustang Mach-E 1400, the Cobra Jet 1400, and the F-100 Eluminator. It made its first public appearance at the King of the Hammers off-road race on January 25th in Johnson Valley, California.
While it’s still early days, the advancements by the F-150 Lightning and Switchgear is a superb promos for EVs in the off-road arena.
As of now, Ford has yet to make plans to put the Switchgear into production. However, the advancements demonstrated by the F-150 Lightning and the Switchgear may pave the way for more electric vehicles that can confidently tackle both urban commutes and off-road adventures.
