?Graham Hill the wheel of the Falcon in the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally.

This Falcon is without doubt the single most famous of all the Alan Mann prepared Falcons that were the backbone of Ford’s Total Performance programme in 1964.The image of the car above was taken in 2022 at the Goodwood Revival, celebrating the life of Graham Hill and the cars that he drove. The E-type alongside is the sister car to the Tommy Sopwith E-Type that Iconic Auctioneers also have in this same sale on August 25th.

This particular Ford Falcon is part of the unique batch of 14 Ford Falcon Futura Sprints prepared for racing by Alan Mann, assigned to him by John Holman of Holman and Moody USA at the end of 1963. The association allowed him to firmly establish Alan Mann Racing which dominated the British saloon car racing scene until the end of the decade.

?Originally built by AMR for Graham Hill to drive in the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally where he famously slid wide on the Col de Turini damaging the Falcon’s left hand wing and losing ten minutes. The ex-Monte Falcons were so successful that all the best drivers queued up to drive them including Frank Gardiner and they dominated the saloon car racing in the Sixties.

It's really then that this Falcon begins its illustrious and famous career in British saloon car racing when returning to the Alan Mann workshops to be prepared for the British Saloon Car Championship in GROUP 5 specification for Roy Pierpiont. With greater scope for technical and innovation than ever before the new Group 5 regulations for the lightweight Falcons promised to be faster than the Mustangs and Galaxies had ever been and so they proved to be.

At over 181kgs lighter and with modified suspension and rally 8” rims they were certainly formidable looking racers.?Roy Pierpiont made the Falcon a staple diet of the British saloon car scene and the history file contains numerous period photographs.

The car was then sold to Martin Birrane before Martin Thomas became the new owner shortly afterwards. For 1970 the regulations switched back to Group 2 and the Falcons in this ‘homologation form, fibreglass panelled’ configuration dissipated around the world.

This car eventually had a full rebuild in the nineties with Cambridge Motorsports before being purchased by Ken McBride of Seattle. It was subsequently bought by our vendor and graced The Goodwood Revival in 2022 forming part of the Graham Hill tribute cavalcade. Appropriately it was prepared for the event by Alan Mann Racing nearly sixty years on from when the ex-Monte Falcons of AMR defined saloon racing in the Sixties.
