Safer gates are more than just Force testing!....
We are often asked if we can issue a certificate of force testing to prove that the gate system is safe. This request is seen as some sort of evidence that the person responsible for the gate has done their job and the whole installation is compliant.
The above picture was taken in 2016 and demonstrates this can be a misconception of fact. This pair of close board (solid), domestic, swing gates PASSED the 27 tests required of it satisfying current standards. These tests are carried out 3 times in 9 places, by calibrated and sensitive equipment, requiring an average pass of each point to be acceptable.
The problem with numerous installations, like the one above; is with the design of the physical element of the system. The gate, its support structure, in this case each pier, and the furniture, in this case the hinges, etc. The gate opens back against the pier and as so, has a reducing gap at the hinge style of each leaf.
Testing does not apply so close to the hinge, nor would it be practical to do so, and as the force increases toward the hinge point, huge pressure builds up at what is seen as the most critical area of consideration, when reviewing safety risk and hazard avoidance.
Traditional gates were only automated by a gate man applying manual operation from remote instruction ('Oi you!' 'Open the gate, our Lady approaches', sort of thing) This meant gates where designed and installed without consideration of today's needs where powered operation is required. Hung mid pier or support was the chosen method as it was likely the strongest and obvious point.
This old way is no longer recognised as the best way and every powered gate hung this way, should now have additional equipment installed to avoid or overcome likely hazards. Hazards such as crushing, entrapment, etc. resulting in possible injury to persons or damage to property.
Please avoid poor design and avoid hazards rather than create them..
HSE notices, NSI & DHF code of practice and good design are useful considerations as may our design guide be of assistance.... www.gate-a-mation.com

8 年Nice post Alan. Very common issue in the US. We are looking into modifications of the safety standard for pressure testing but as your article points out, its not that easy. When you look at all the gate styles and variations in mounting options for all it can also be further complicated. I appreciate your post and glad articles like this are in circulation.
