?Ashley Goodall is SVP of Leadership and Team Intelligence at technology giant Cisco and previously served as Chief Learning Officer at Deloitte. He taught last year in UC Berkeley's Leadership Development program (Strategic Broadening Seminar) for the US Army.

"The best coaches (and the best team leaders) devote most of their attention to figuring out what’s working and then how to build on that. They know that fixing poor performance gets you only adequate performance. You can’t remediate your way to excellence—and that the raw ingredients of great performance are the moments where something goes well. This is hard for many of us to understand, however, because what motivates our instinctive focus on poor performance is fear of failure. Mistakes get our attention very quickly. This isn’t necessarily bad, it’s just woefully incomplete as a performance strategy."
