Forbes 50 Over 50: These Women Are Winning Life’s Second Half
This week, Forbes published one of my favorite lists of the year: the 50 Over 50.?
If you’re not familiar, the fourth annual 50 Over 50 list features a collection of women who have careers that are hitting powerful peaks during life’s second half.?
Take Miriam Rivera. As ForbesWomen editor Maggie McGrath writes, Rivera was born in 1964 to a pair of migrant farmers at a time when women in the U.S. could not get a credit card or a mortgage without a male co-signer. Fast-forward 60 years, and Rivera is now the cofounder and CEO of Ulu Ventures, a Palo Alto-based venture capital firm with $400 million in assets under management.?
Rivera is just one of 200 all-new members of the 50 Over 50 list, which was produced in partnership with MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski and her Know Your Value Initiative. The list is divided into four broad categories: Impact , Innovation , Investment and Lifestyle .?
Headlining this year’s Impact category is Dawn Staley , one of the most successful basketball coaches in the NCAA. The 54-year-old Staley has guided the University of South Carolina women’s team to three national championships since she was named head coach in 2008—the most recent title coming in April to cap off a perfect 38-0 season.
“Coaching is my second skin,” she says. “It’s exactly what I’m supposed to be doing.”
McGrath also gives us a glimpse behind the scenes at the process of narrowing the 50 Over 50 list down to just 200 individuals. She writes that the judges must ask candidates tough questions like: What are your greatest “Over 50” accomplishments? Did you step into a new or more powerful role later in life? Did you make a big pivot? Are you achieving at scale??
The end result is a collection of inspiring women who are utilizing their age and experience to power their successful careers.
“The reason why I think this is extraordinary is because when I was young, I always wanted to be in that 30 Under 30,” says filmmaker Ava DuVernay. “I never was. And I thought, ‘Oh, my chance to be in one of those cool things has passed.’ But look at me now: I’m 50 Over 50! It’s fantastic.”
